The following tables present excerpts of the G-DRG catalogue 2007. The catalogue is divided into different MDC (Major Diagnostic Categories) partitions; we have divided our excerpts accordingly

For each DRG there is the description (basically following from the prevalent diagnosis), followed by the case mix value. These two factors and the average length of inpatient stay (LOS) define the relevant DRG.

To estimate the treatment costs, the case mix value has to be multiplied by a so-called hospital base rate to give the relevant costs of treating a patient who has been coded into the DRG. For estimating possible costs in the lists that follow, we have taken an average hospital base rate of 2900,- as basis of calculation. Real base rates differ between hospitals, the range is about 2600.- to 3000.- Euro.

The resulting sum is the amount that the hospital is allowed to charge for treating the patient (unless it is an exclusively private clinic with no government accreditation) and it includes the costs of all medical staff, also the physicians.

However, patients can opt for private medical treatment by the chairperson or head of the clinic (which international patients frequently do). In this case, the doctor’s fees are charged on top of the hospital fees, and to make this clear, we have added an estimate for the doctor’s fees in the lists.

For estimating the costs of single room comfort accommodation in the hospital, the average LOS can be multiplied
 by about 100.- Euro for the average hospital.
